A Simple Tool for Attaining Detachment.

Throughout the ages, mankind has sought to adapt and simplify their responses to a vast and bewildering planet.

Building shelters against the elements. planting crops in predictable, sustainable locations. Even inventing methods of travel that exceed the pace and distance of running.

But the terrors that surrounded them was rivaled by the terrors within.

Nightmares, anxieties, violent compulsions, hostilities toward neighbors, and outright war have been mankind’s constant companions.

These things encouraged an internal response, a counterattack against enemies within.

And leading the charge in this psychological counterattack have been mind-clarifying litanies.

Litanies are essentially mechanisms for focusing and clearing the mind.

A litany can be anything from a simple phrase to a complex labor intensive prayer session.

These include simple mantras like:

Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight.

Moderate mantras like the fiction-based Litany Against Fear from the novel series Dune:

‘I must not fear.
